Why Do Some People Have The Picture of America all Wrong?

I've noticed that some people - mainly Europeans - judge America harshly and speak of it as if it is the worst country on the face of this Earth. I want to know why they judge so much when they don't even know anything except stereotypes; America is A LOT different than what some people think of it.
