Purpose of both right hook and jab?

Im a righty and fight with my left hand as my casual jab(front hand) and my right as my power hit(back hand). Ive been curious about what situations would be the most damaging by using either the straight jab with my right or a hook with my right. My question is what situation is the straight hit and the hook most effective?..And which hit is better for ko?
